Photo To 3D Converter program (free)

The "Photo To 3D converter" is a java program that you start by clicking the 'launch' button below. The program will compute a 3D model from your photos and let you save them in these 3D formats: 3DS, X3D, VRML, Collada (dae), and Anim8or (an8). The program is still in beta testing and might contain some bugs, but it is free of charge.

Photo To 3D Converter

To be able to run this program, you need to install java. For safety reasons, this program runs in a java "sandbox" that will protect you privacy and your computer. The "sandbox" will ask for your permission before accessing any file on your computer.

About the quality of the result

The quality of the resulting 3D model will depend on the quality of your photos. Always use a good light source during photo shots (but not a camera flash). Read more about taking good photos in the instructions section.

Converting 2 photos

The 3D model created from two photos will often look a little distorted, this is because there is not enough information in two photos to accurately calculate the perspective. The program will therefore "guessed" a perspective (wish might mot be entirely accurate).

Converting 3 or more photos

When you use 3 or more photos, the program will try to create the 3D model with a correct perspective. But for this to work correctly, all photos must have the same zoom level. So, if you want accurate results, do not change zoom level on your camera in between photo shots.

About computation times

To convert photos to a 3D model a lot of analyzing and computations has to be made. This takes time even for a modern computer. In table below, some estimations of computation times are listed. When you start experimenting with this program, always use 2 photos to get "quick" results. You can start using more photos when you get the hang of it.

Number of Photos Estimated computation time*
2 10 minutes
3 1 hour
4 1.5 hours
5 2 hours
10 8 hours
20 32 hours

* computation times also depends on the resolution of your photos and the speed of your computer.
